PROCMURA continues its pursuit of enhancing the capacity of church leaders in order to have a church leadership that is better informed and equipped to address the complexity of Christian- Muslim relations, and how to approach emerging issues and challenges.
In line with this PROCMURA in partnership and collaboration with the RCEA, held a conference for Church Leaders’ on Challenges and Opportunities for Mission amidst the religiously plural societies of Kenya. The teaming up with the RCEA had an added value as it is a mainline protestant church spread across East Africa and working in Kenya and some parts of Tanzania. It has at least twelve presbyteries with more than a hundred parishes spread across the region with a few congregations in Tanzania.
The conference took place from 2nd to 3rd June 2021, at the RCEA Conference and Training Centre in Eldoret, Kenya. This gathering brought together the top leadership of the RCEA, the presbytery moderators and different heads of departments to explore the challenges and the opportunities for mission. The conference was officially opened by the RCEA Synod moderator Rev. David Letting. In his address to the church leaders, reflecting upon Paul’s message in Philippians 2:14-16, he called upon the church leaders to “Shine as lights in the world”.

The General Adviser of PROCMURA Rev. Dr. Adrake, in addressing the conference referred to the PROCMURA’s Mission Statement of ‘Faithful Christian Witness in an interfaith environment of Christians and Muslims that respects the spirit of good neighbourliness’. He emphasised that as the Gospel means good news the churches in their bid to witness to Christ should do well to avoid polemics that will jeopardise the spirit of good neighbourliness and thereby make the Gospel the bad news that it is not. Christian witness he emphasised is mandatory and a life wire of the church.

The conference brought to light a number of challenges faced by RECA as was highlighted by the moderator of the church. He highlighted some challenges in carrying out mission amidst the changing religious landscape of the country, which is becoming more pluralistic with the changing times. He noted and corroborated the General Adviser’s call to a faithful Christian witness to the gospel, while at the same time living in peace with the religious other. He called on PROCMURA to help build the capacity of the leaders of the church on matters of Christian-Muslim relations, and approaches to faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in an interfaith environment. PROCMURA and RECA settled to work together in this area and in many other Programmes to ensure that the church meets the needs of the people.
One of the outcomes of the conference was the commitment by PROCMURA and RCEA to work together and address interfaith relations in the region. The establishment of the working relationship was marked by the cutting of a cake to symbolize the beginning of their journey together.
The RCEA Synod Moderator Rev. Leting' and PROCMURA General Adviser Rev. Dr. Komi Adrake cut a cake as a symbol of relations between the two organisations to work together and enhance the role of the church in faithful Christian witness that respects the spirit of good neighbourliness.
