We, the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA), extend our warm congratulations to Bishop John Shetima Chibok on his appointment as a member of the newly inaugurated Adamawa State Peace, Conflict Resolution and Social Integration Commission by His Excellency, the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
Bishop Shetima, a senior cleric of the Methodist Church in Nigeria and a dedicated member of PROCMURA’s Area Committee for Northern Nigeria, brings a wealth of experience, moral integrity, and a proven track record in promoting peaceful coexistence and interfaith understanding. His appointment to this strategic Commission not only reflects the trust placed in him by the government but also highlights the importance of inclusive leadership in addressing complex social issues.
Over the years, Bishop Shetima has made notable and impactful contributions to the work of PROCMURA in Northern Nigeria and beyond. As an active member of the Area Committee, he has played a vital role in strengthening Christian-Muslim relations, supporting community-based peace initiatives, and guiding theological reflections on coexistence and religious tolerance. His voice and leadership have enriched PROCMURA’s continental efforts to realise a peaceful continent, equipping faith actors, and deepening interreligious collaboration in diverse and often challenging contexts.
We acknowledge that Bishop Shetima’s appointment to this role strongly resonates with our commitment to promoting constructive Christian-Muslim relations and peaceful coexistence in a religiously pluralistic society. His appointment affirms the principle that despite religious and cultural differences, communities can work together in pursuit of justice, peace, reconciliation, and the shared well-being of humanity. It is through such inclusive and deliberate efforts that lasting peace and development become achievable realities.
PROCMURA takes great pride in Bishop Shetima’s recognition and affirms our full confidence in his ability to contribute meaningfully to the Commission’s mandate. As an organisation dedicated to building peace and constructive relations between people of various religious backgrounds across Africa, with a keen focus on Christians and Muslims, we view his appointment as not only a personal honour but also a reinforcement of the important role that religious actors play in peacebuilding and social integration.
The establishment of this Commission marks a significant milestone in Adamawa State’s long-standing efforts to foster peace, rebuild trust among communities, and provide institutional mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution. It is particularly noteworthy that this Commission emerges from a broader process of reflection and consultation in response to past intercommunal tensions in the state. The inclusion of religious leaders and diverse notable stakeholders in this framework demonstrates a commendable commitment to participatory and values-driven peacebuilding.
We assure Bishop Shetima of our continued support as he undertakes this important responsibility and pray for wisdom, strength, and discernment as he contributes to advancing peace and stability in Adamawa State and beyond.
Once again, PROCMURA congratulates Bishop John Shetima Chibok on this well-deserved appointment.
