The Mission of the Program for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA) encourages Faithful Christian witness to the Gospel in an interfaith environment of Christians and Muslims that respects the spirit of good neighborliness and Christian constructive engagement with Muslims for peace and peaceful coexistence. This has continued to fuel PROCMURA’s resolve to empower and capacitate the church at the grassroots across Africa on navigating the complexities of Christian-Muslim Relations as they carry out the mission of the church particularly in the current religiously pluralistic environment.
To achieve this, PROCMURA has entered into partnerships and Memorandums of Understanding with churches from across the continent, platforms that have allowed strengthening of PROCMURA’s relationship and work with the churches in Africa by building the capacity of the church on Christian-Muslim Relations through workshops and trainings, seasonal schools in addition to offering scholarships for Master of Arts degree in Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations (ICMR) and other certificated short courses in ICMR. The partnerships, and collaborations have created platforms for the training of church leaders, women and the youth on various aspects of Christian-Muslim Relations.
More recently, PROCMURA and the Anglican Church of Kenya Diocese of Mombasa held a church leaders’ consultative meeting towards establishing long-term partnership in the area of Christian-Muslim Relations.

While welcoming PROCMURA to the Diocese, Bishop Alphonse Bayo Mwaro of the ACK Diocese of Mombasa, acknowledged that in spite of the fact that there has been coexistence between Christians and Muslims in the region, not so much constructive engagements have happened between the two religious communities from the previous years. In addition, Bishop Mwaro commended PROCMURA for its programmatic focus that speaks to their context as a church in the region.

For a long time, the coastal region of Kenya has been characterized with stereotypes, historical misinformation, misconceptions and suspicion among religious communities. As the participants dissected during the experience sharing session, cultural practices and stigmatization have also contributed in complicating the relationship between faith communities in the region.
On her part, the Programme Officer of PROCMURA Rev. Dr. Salli Effungani took the clergy through understanding the history of PROCMURA as an organization and its work across the continent and a presentation on Christian Witness in an Interfaith Environment given the reality that Christianity and Islam are the two main religions in the region.
