Who We Are

The Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA) is the one and only pan African Christian organisation with a specific focus on Christians’ constructive relations with Muslims in witness and for peace and peaceful co-existence. Founded in 1959 PROCMURA’s constituencies are made up of Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox, Evangelicals and African Instituted (Independent) Churches. It does have Catholics in its constituencies some of who have served in various capacities within the PROCMURA family. The Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa is currently well established in 20 countries in East, West, Central and Southern Africa and operates in ten more countries where it is not yet well established.

Vision Statement

A continent where Christian and Muslim communities in spite of their differences, work together for justice, peace and reconciliation, towards the holistic development of the human family and the environment.

Mission Statement

Faithful Christian witness to the Gospel in an interfaith environment of Christians and Muslims that respects the spirit of good neighbourliness and Christian constructive engagement with Muslims for peace and peaceful coexistence.

Overall Goal

To see an African continent where Christians and Muslims uphold the principles of religious freedom and all that it entails; constructively relate to promote peace in the society and peaceful coexistence between Christian and Muslim communities; jointly respond to environmental challenges.

Youth and Interreligious Cooperation in Africa

Africa has the world’s largest youth population, and this number is projected to double by 2050. By then, more than 75 percent of Africans will be under the age of 35. This vibrant, dynamic generation is one of the continent’s greatest assets, capable of propelling Africa toward lasting peace and sustainable development through its energy, creativity, and innovation. This population, however, remains vulnerable to manipulation, often targeted by those who exploit political and religious differences to sow seeds of division and conflict.

That is why, over the years, we have been equipping these young people with the knowledge and skills to build inclusive communities free from religious discrimination, where youth work hand in hand, irrespective of their religious backgrounds or affiliations, to shape a more cohesive, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous Africa. We welcome you to partner and collaborate with us in this incredible journey!

FoRB Stakeholders Workshop in South-West Cameroon

Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB)

Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) is a universal human right. PROCMURA addresses FoRB from a faith perspective point of view, dealing specifically with religious people (Christians and Muslims).

This programme brings together various stakeholders including; religious leaders, women, youth, civil society, communities, media, and government agencies to enhance their capacity on FoRB so that they can identify FoRB violations, advocate for FoRB and work to promote FoRB.

Recently, PROCMURA commissioned a Baseline Survey on “Promoting FoRB for Women in Sub-Saharan Africa." The survey was conducted in Southwest Cameroon, Kenya's Coastal Region, and Northern Nigeria and its report was ratified and adopted.
