Across many parts of Africa, young people are growing up in a world where access to digital skills increasingly shapes opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and participation in public life. Yet for many communities, particularly those in remote and underserved areas, such opportunities remain limited.
In Lokichar, Turkana County in northern Kenya, a group of young people is beginning to change that narrative. The first cohort of trainees at the Lokichar Youth Empowerment Centre recently graduated from a computer literacy programme supported by PROCMURA and the Reformed Church of East Africa (RCEA), marking an important milestone for both the participants and the wider community. Even more encouraging was the decision by many of the graduates to continue their learning journey by enrolling in Module Two of the programme. For several of the trainees, the course provided their first sustained opportunity to work with computers and engage with digital learning.
Over the three-month training period, the young people acquired practical skills in computer literacy. These are skills that have become increasingly important in today's world, whether in education, business, employment, or everyday communication. The graduation ceremony represented more than the completion of a training course. It reflected the determination of young people to invest in themselves and their future, despite the challenges that often limit access to such opportunities.
Located in a region where many young people continue to face barriers to skills development and employment, the Lokichar Youth Empowerment Centre was established to provide practical learning opportunities that respond directly to local realities. Through its programmes, the centre seeks to equip young people and women with skills that can strengthen their confidence, broaden their opportunities, and contribute to community well-being.
The decision by many graduates to proceed to the next level of training speaks not only to the value of the programme but also to a growing appreciation within the community of the importance of digital literacy. It demonstrates a willingness among young people to continue learning and adapting to a rapidly changing world. The centre forms part of PROCMURA's broader community empowerment efforts, which recognise that lasting transformation requires attention to both social relationships and practical community needs. Alongside its work in peacebuilding, interreligious engagement, and social cohesion, PROCMURA continues to support initiatives that strengthen human dignity, expand opportunities, and improve livelihoods at the grassroots.
As the next phase of training begins, the achievements of the first cohort provide a glimpse of what can happen when communities gain access to relevant skills and supportive learning environments. The graduates leave with more than certificates. They leave with new knowledge, greater confidence, and a foundation upon which they can continue building their future. For Lokichar, this first graduation is an encouraging step in a journey that is only beginning.
