East Africa and Indian Ocean Alumni Consultation Report 2012
Strengthening a Regional Network of Practitioners
Held at the Jumuia Conference and Country Home in Limuru, Kenya, from 8 to 14 July 2012, the consultation brought together more than 30 graduates from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Madagascar.
The gathering formed part of PROCMURA's effort to strengthen its pool of scholars and practitioners able to support churches, Area Committees and communities in constructive Christian-Muslim relations.
The consultation connected academic learning with practical engagement, good neighbourliness, peace and peaceful coexistence.
Purpose of the Consultation
- Orient and reconnect graduates in Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations with PROCMURA's model and mandate.
- Develop a regional resource pool for research, training and programme implementation.
- Examine emerging issues affecting Christian-Muslim relations in different African contexts.
- Strengthen networks among scholars, churches, PROCMURA structures and learning institutions.
- Link academic knowledge with practical work at grassroots and institutional levels.
Consultation at a Glance
Regional Participation
More than 30 graduates and resource persons participated, representing six countries in East Africa and the Indian Ocean region.
Academic and Practical Learning
Sessions combined PROCMURA's institutional history and principles with academic papers, country experiences and practical case discussions.
Shared Commitment
Participants adopted a statement of intent committing themselves to service, responsible Christian witness and constructive engagement for peace.

Agreed Way Forward
Participants proposed individual action plans supported through Central Office monitoring, periodic progress updates and further consultations. They also called for stronger collaboration with churches and National Councils of Churches, continued regional networking and greater use of trained graduates in PROCMURA's programmes.
