PROCMURA Lays Plans for Nigeria Intervention

February the 26th at 7:16 a.m. blasts ring out in Jos once again, this time the target is the Church of Christ in Nigeria popularly referred to as COCIN. A car slams through the gates and the security guards on duty open fire, in a split second the car with two passengers tears open from the blast of a suicide bomber. Chaos, parishioners running out from the early morning 7:00 am service, scores injured some dead; debris all over, people scampering for safety, children lying injured on the ground men and women. A most heartbreaking sight.

En route to Nigeria was Dr. Johnson Mbillah, General Adviser (GA) of PROCMURA, who was scheduled to hold meetings with the Chairman of PROCMURA, Bishop Josiah Idowu Fearon and a number of both Christian and Muslim Leaders as well as hold an extraordinary PROCMURA Area Committee meeting to map out the way forward towards making a contribution to finding a solution to the mayhem that has engulfed Northern Nigeria. Overtaken by events the GA knew he had his work cut out for him and instead of Jos had the meeting in Kaduna.

Nigeria (Northern part especially) has continued to be of particular interest to PROCMURA, having organised a Christian and Muslim leaders conference in Kaduna in 2010. In the recent past it has become crucial to engage Christian and Muslim leaders both at the grassroots and at the highest echelons figure out what needs to be done, when and how.

PROCMURA knows very well that it cannot superimpose a solution in Nigeria and thus sought to consult with leaders in the country to establish the best way forward. PROCMURA seeks to compliment already existing efforts in the country but also make headway in bringing Christian and Muslim communities together to constructively engage one another. Jos which is considered the fault line of area can and will rise from the pitfalls of the last couple of years. What is needed is a true resolution to the underlying problems and not a bandage to patch up.

Dr. Mbillah was able to hold a number of meetings and is in the process of mapping out a way forward in terms of the strategy for engagement.

BBC’s Heart & Soul and PROCMURA

The BBC’s Heart and Soul Programme over the weekend aired the discussions (interview) held over Christian-Muslim relations in East Africa. The focus revolved on Christians and Muslims in Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan, and the challenges and prospects for peace and peaceful coexistence. Issues touching on common areas of conjuncture between Christians and Muslims were highlighted in the discussions with a particular tree planting project in Uganda taking centre stage. THE GENERAL ADVISER MADE VISITING SCHOLAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, CANADA

The General Adviser of PROCMURA, Rev. Dr. Johnson Mbillah has been made the Anne Duncan Gray Visiting Scholar of Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, Canada.In his formal announcement of this honour given to Dr. Mbillah, the Principal of Emmanuel College Dr. Mark G. Toulouse wrote: “In addition to bringing an international presence to our campus …your work on Christian-Muslim dialogue will contribute to our own conversations as we work to solidify the foundations of our new Muslim Studies Program at Emmanuel College…Your presence with us will also provide opportunity for our Canadian Churches and academic community to hear from you..”

Briefing the Executive Committee of PROCMURA during its recent meeting at the All Africa Conference of Churches, Archbishop Desmond Tutu Guest House, the General Adviser said that the proposal to make him the Anne Duncan Gray Visiting Scholar was first made know to him by Omega Bula, Minister, Partners in Mission (formerly Justice, Global and Ecumenical Relations) Unit in February 2011.

The Executive Committee on granting him leave of absence to fulfil this honour done him, urged him to use part of his time at the University of Toronto, to refresh his academic interest and do some writing that will help to promote Christian-Muslim relations in general, and the ministry of PROCMURA in particular.

Dr. Mbillah will be away till the end of the year.
